The Lodge

Orsett Masonic Hall

We meet, along with many other Lodges and Chapters at the Orsett Masonic Hall, at Rectory Road, Orsett, where since 1963 we have enjoyed the ‘hallowed atmosphere’ of a purpose built hall. The hall itself is split into three distinct areas, the temple itself, a dining area and the social club area. In the original configuration the lodge, social area and the dining area were all held in the same room, but the building was extended and improved over the years.

The temple is of an unusual architectural design, the internal layout of the lodge is traditional, however the temple itself resides in the rafters of the building and it has an ‘A’ frame canopy which extends the entire length of the temple roof, On many occasions we have heard the thump of head on oak, as the unsuspecting soul lifts his head or attempts to rise from his position only to meet one of the cross sections which stand proud of the roof. It is a very unusual and pleasant lodge room, and it is indeed a site to behold.

The Dining Hall

The dining hall is a dedicated part of the building and is used for all ‘festive boards’, it has the capacity to seat eighty+ people in comfort and it has a small stage area to the south east of the hall, with an organ and a piano for the more harmonious aspects to our festivities. This room is obviously the main social area of the building and the room is adorned with a dado rail with an interesting assortment of Masonic and other curious such as a collection of Beer mugs and plates.

The Bar / Museum

The social club area is pleasantly decorated and comfortable, where brethren and their families can come for a quiet drink and enjoy the social aspects of the temple. The lodges and chapters ensure that there is a steady stream of events, to which all are welcome.

The bar area is decorated in wood panel and on all of the inner walls are the respective banners of all of the Lodges and Chapters which meet here. The dado rail is also continued in this area and again shows many curious which are constantly added to.

Lodge of Instruction

We came into existence in 1930 and have met at various venues throughout our time. It has been in the last 24 Years that we have held our ”L.O.I“ at the Woolmarket at Horndon on the Hill and it has turned out to be a well adapted and unique venue.

We meet every Thursday between September and May

Our Lodge performs workings known as ‘Emulation workings’, and it is the original and the best form of ritual!
The L.O.I has four principle officers, they are :

  • The Preceptor ( He maintains the standards of the rites & ceremonies )
  • The Assistant Preceptor ( He assists the Preceptor )
  • The Secretary ( He keeps the records and correspondence of the L.O.I )
  • The Treasurer ( He keeps the financial records of the L.O.I in good order )

A number of Past Masters of the Lodge attend to pass on their hints and tips and to encourage the younger members to do well with all their endeavors.
